Most of his work has been in Iceland and Greenland, where he’s gained extensive experience flying in often hostile and unpredictable arctic weather including flatlight/whiteout, falling snow, low visibility and wind up to 65 knots. During his career Jón has also flown in twenty separate volcanic eruptions in his native Iceland, with scientists, film crews and sightseeing tourists. 

As a certified FI, FIE, TRI, TRE, EX for over thirty years Jón has taught and mentored a number of pilots, and continues to do so in his current role as head of training and chief pilot at Norðurflug.
